The European Union has put X’s recommendation algorithms under scrutiny under the Digital Services Act (DSA). The European Commission has requested detailed information on the algorithms that regulate the way the platform recommends content to its users.
The European Union is conducting further investigations into X
The European Commission has asked X to provide internal documentation on its recommendation systems and information on recent changes to the algorithms. It also issued a regulation requiring X to keep records of any future changes to its recommendation systems until the end of 2025.
The latest development expands the scope of an ongoing investigation that the Commission launched into X in 2023. As part of the investigation, the Commission has also requested access to some of X’s commercial and technical interfaces.
The EU is taking such steps to prevent the abuse of social media platforms to influence election results. Previously, the German government accused Elon Musk of meddling in the upcoming federal elections. However, the Commission said its latest request was not related to this specific allegation.
The Digital Services Act, which came into force in the European Union in 2023, imposes a number of obligations on major platforms. The Commission’s actions require social media platforms, including X, to comply with the new regulations.
On the other hand, X has taken a new step to enable users to distinguish between fake and real accounts. The platform is introducing a tagging system to distinguish parody and humor accounts from other accounts
